Summary
Without seeking to defend the overfishing of cod, both in the North Sea and in the Atlantic off Newfoundland, where European fishermen have been catching cod since the 15th century, it is now the case that, by being scarcer, cod is more socially acceptable. When, years ago, a friend of my father would say dismissively that 'cod is for servants', it accounted for half of all white fish landed at British ports and could therefore be judged common in both senses of the word.
