Britain was asked if it wanted to join Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, but fortunately the Labour prime minister Clement Attlee didn't fancy the idea, saying that he didn't see why Britain should go crawling to countries defeated in the war and whose sovereignty had been damaged while Britain's hadn't.
