Summary
The purpose of Hyde Park is for people to enjoy nature, have a picnic, take their children to the playground, jog gently round the Serpentine. Yes, there has always been a commercial aspect to the park. In 1851 the Crystal Palace was erected in Hyde Park (even then the neighbours complained). In 1969 the Rolling Stones played to a sell-out crowd. In 1977 there was the much-applauded Silver Jubilee Exhibition.
